There have been some great new comic book series released this year. Everybody knows about Saga and Fatale, but what about the other great series...
The following is a round up of why 2012 has been such a great year, so far, for new comics!

Road Rage #1
Comic book adaptation of Stephen King, Joe Hill and Richard Matheson stories. Dirty bikers vs killer trucks!

Winter Soldier #1
Super-hero, espionage series starring former Captain America sidekick. Amazing artwork.

Reset #1
Peter 'Hate' Bagge's new series. Washed up 'celebrity' is signed up for 'medical' testing. But there's a more sinister undertone.

No Place Like Home #1
One of the new wave of great new Image comics. A girl returns to her hometown to find some pretty weird goings-on. Is it a reworking of Wizard of OZ?

3 Story (One Shot)
Matt Kindt's quiet tale of a giant man.

Conan The Barbarian #1
Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan deliver a pretty faithful early Conan story.

Saucer Country #1
Potential US Presidential candidate is haunted by memories of her alien abduction. Great character study with the potential to be a fantastic series. By Paul Cornell

Super Crooks #1
Mark Millar's Ocean's Eleven, with superpowers!

Alabaster #1
Post apocalypse western road movie? Supernatural horror? Perfect for fans of Buffy or The Stand.

Secret #1
Jonathan Hickman's modernisation of the old fashioned protection racket.

Manhattan Projects #1
More Hickman. The secret history of post war scientists.

New Deadwardians #1
Fantastic start! Rich, posh vampires are plagued by lower class zombies. Undead Downton Abbey!

Batman Arkham Unhinged #1
Set during the second game, fleshing out the story and side mission.

Green Lantern The Animated Series #1
All ages superhero action adventure!

Star Wars Blood Ties: Boba Fett is Dead #1
Clearing up some of the mystery surrounding the Galaxies favourite bounty hunter.

Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man #1
All ages superhero action adventure staring Peter Parker.

Secret Service #1
Mark Millar and Dave 'Watchmen' Gibbons deliver a chavy James Bond origin story.

America's Got Powers #1
Pop Idol for superheroes, written by Jonathan Ross.

Crossed: Badlands #1
Garth Ennis returns to the most brutal 'zombie' series of them all.

Batman #1 (not strictly this year, but still in stock and still ace).
Scott Snyder is developing into one of the best Batman writers ever. His combination of action adventure, strong characters, history and architecture will define this era of Batman comics.

Avengers Vs X-Men #1
The phoenix force is coming back to Earth. X-Men hope it's power will reignite the mutant population, the Avengers fear that it's power could destroy everything. FIGHT!

Saga #1
Brian K Vaughan, writer of Y The Last Man and Ex Machina, returns to comics. It's a science fiction fantasy love story, with Vaughan's usual knack for great characters and dialogue.

Fatale #1
Brubaker and Phillips! Decade spanning, absolutely compelling gothic noir.

Thief of Thieves #1
Written by Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer. One of the worlds greatest criminals tries to put his life of crime behind him.

As of writing this all the first issues are in stock, along with all the subsequent issues up to present.
(yes, I know there are twenty four comics listed here).

Self Made Hero is one of my favourite UK graphic novel publishers. We've put together a top ten of our favourite of their books. All are currently available at OK Comics...

1. Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy & Frederick Peeters
Award winning science fiction story focusing of the social interactions of several different groups of people who are forced to live the whole of their lives in one day.

2. Hellraisers by Robert Sellars & JAKe
The life stories of four great actors, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Richard Harris and Oliver Reed, who only intermittently reached their true potential because of their hell-raising.

3. Robot by Stanislaw Lem and Andrekj Klimowski & Danusia Schejbal
Lem was a contemporary of Asmiov but Lem’s robot stories have more feeling to them and are frankly far more interesting because of it.

4. Fish & Chocolate by Kate Brown
Three short stories, variations of the theme of relationships between mothers and their children, astoundingly well drawn and full of fantastic imagery.

5. Castro by Reinhard Kleist
This book charts the rise of Castro from the Cuban revolution in 1958 through to the brutal dictatorship that Cuba becomes as seen through the eyes of an international photo journalist.

6. Gonzo by Will Bingley & Anthony Hope-Smith
Hunter S. Thompson’s life recounted in graphic novel form, focusing on his Fear and Loathing books of the 1970’s and his belief in individual liberty above most other things.

7. Don Quixote Volume One by Rob Davis
The first half of an excellent adaptation of the classic post-modern novel, Rob Davis uses the medium of comics to really adapt the text rather than merely illustrate.

8. Le Morte D’Arthur by Mallory and John Matthews & Will Sweeney
Based upon the Mallory book from the 1400’s which chronicles the myth of Arthur and the breaking up of the Knights of the Round Table due to the petty rivalries.

9. Lovecraft Anthology vol 1 by various
Seven of Lovecraft’s best short stories are adapted by a wide variety of artists. In particular Alice Duke’s suitable horrific artwork for Dagon is incredible.

10. Hound of the Baskervilles By I N J Culbard
Excellent, word-perfect adaptation of the best of the Holmes novels, it is both a gothic horror novel and a murder mystery. Holmes versus mythical beasts.

So, looking at some comics websites it seems there is a lot of comment available about Marvel binning a load of titles - Herc, Ghost Rider, Daken, X-23, Alpha Flight (sort of), PunisherMAX (sort of), Black Panther and Iron Man 2.0, as well as a couple that never even got released.

Inevitably, I've been buying all these books. I expected none of them to last. I'm not sure why anyone is surprised at their cancellation? The last time I was surprised that a new book 'made it' was Thunderbolts, some 160 issues ago. But usually you can tell that a new book will not last. They don't have to be bad comics (although they often are), but, you know, there's a massive recession going on, so unless it says Avengers, X-Men, Wolverine or Spider-Man on the front, it's not going to last. Will Defenders last? No - might make double figures. Scarlet Spider? Gone before 12.

I guess my point/question here is: does this matter? Alpha Flight only counts as cancelled as Marvel briefly said that the 8-issue mini would continue, before quickly deciding not. Surely just saying 'this is a mini' or, more honestly, 'this is a planned trade being release in six bits' would be better? If the mini sells well, do another. But launching a book that, Wolverine aside, does not headline characters created in the first few years of Marvel never seems to stick, so why keep trying?

While DC are quite vocally pushing their new range of fifty-two comics, now in it's second month, Marvel have been quietly, subtly, launching their own range of new, entry level, series.
With one or two starting each month, including a relaunch/reboot/restart of their Ultimate line, Marvel now have a bold selection of comics ideal for new readers.
And there are more to come before the end of the year.

- Annihilators #1
Writers Abnett and Lanning set up a fresh series bringing their cosmic characters down to Earth.

- Captain America #1
Issue one is almost like a sequel to the recent movie. Nick Fury is there, Steve Rogers is friends with Dugan. The real star of the show is Steve McNiven's amazing artwork.

- Daredevil #1
Matt Murdock returns to a more old school, fun comic book. Gone is the grim and gritty descent into mental breakdown, Mark Waid balances a modern crime comic with classic marvel wackiness perfectly.

FF #1
Future Foundation? First Family? Fantastic Five? Johnny Storm is dead but do the remaining members of the Fantastic Four need a replacement? And who will it be? Spider-Man? Doctor Doom? Or somebody closer to home?

Ghost Rider #1
Marvels bike riding spirit of vengeance is back, but British writer Rob Williams has reinvented HIM as you've never seen HER before.

- Moon Knight #1
The fan favourite creative team of Bendis and Maleev bring us a darker, more troubled Moon Knight.

- Punisher #1
Not quite as brutal and 'adults only' as the Marvel Max Punisher, but it's exactly what you want from a Marvel Universe based crime series. Greg Rucka know crime comics!

- Mighty Thor #1
Released at the same time as the movie, this is a pretty cosmic Thor comic featuring Silver Surfer and Galactus.

- Fear Itself #1
It doesn't matter who your favourite Marvel character is, they're probably in the large scale Marvel 'event' series.

- Brilliant #1
Bendis, again, and Mark Bagley's creator owned series. Set outside the Marvel Universe it's the story of a group of college students who invent superpowers.

- Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1
I just call it Ultimate Avengers. Is that OK? Nick Fury's leading a worldwide network of heroes solving international political problems.

- Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1
Crosses over quite closely with Ultimate Ultimates, following Clint Barton on a solo mission.

- Ultimate Comics X-Men #1
For the first time in a long time it's about a small group of mutants who vow to do good in a society that fears and hates them.

- Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1
Peter Parker is dead. This is the origin story of a new Spider 'Man', with similar, but strangely different powers. And the kid's a really good character too.

As of writing this we have all the first issues of these series, and loads of the subsequent issues too.

Coming Soon.

- Uncanny X-Men #1
A brand new series featuring Cyclops following his own path as the main X-Men leader.

- Wolverine and the X-Men #1
After leaving Cyclops, Wolverine now leads his own group of rogue X-Men, written by Jason Aaron.

- Avenging Spider-Man #1
Joe Madureira provides the artwork for this new series focusing on Spidey's adventures with the Avengers.

- Incredible Hulk #1
Jason Aaron has put a pretty dark spin on both Punisher an Wolverine recently, now he takes on the Hulk! With art by Marc Silvestri.

Avengers 1959 #1
Howard Chaykin doing superheroes right. Half Mad Men, half Avengers, all awesome.

Have I missed any?
Which have been your favourites?

 Joe Quesada:
"Hey Guys, thanks for coming round. We need a great idea for our next summer Event. Do you remember how everybody loved Civil War? Do you remember how Nitro blowing up that school was like 911, and the superhero registration act was a metaphor for the patriot act, and that negative zone prison was akin to Guantanamo Bay? Yeah? Do you remember how even though it was essentially a big fight it still had something to say about the real world? Yeah? Do you remember how, even five years later, it's still the best selling Marvel book at OK Comics?
Well, we need something like that but its got to say something about peoples apprehension about the economy, or their concerns about the future of their country or children, or their fear of outsiders?
Anybody got any great ideas?"
Matt Fraction:
"Yeah, me. How about we get Red Skulls daughter to be the new Red Skull, how about she makes a deal with Loki or something and she wakes up a snake at the bottom of the sea, and the snake makes loads of hammers like what Thor has but the snake, who we never actually see, gives all the hammers to supervillains and they start hitting stuff with them and Ben Grimm glows orange.
Also. Red Skull's daughter is Ghost Rider too. Also, we'll spread it out over seven issues and across about 40 other comics"
Joe Quesada:
"Anybody else...? No?"

t’s sunny and almost warm! It’s a bit like summer except there aren’t any super heroey movies doing the rounds. But there will be! Of course I won’t be seeing any of them but in the interests of general tomfoolery I sat Margot Lane down in front of the trailers and asked her if we would be likely to watch any of them.
It was kind of like a humane but unregulated experiment to see how much appeal these things would have to a non-comics reader. Although she has read 300, V FOR VENDETTA, KILLING JOKE, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN Vol.1 and half of WATCHMEN so she is aware of comics although unaware of how lucky she is to share her life with someone with such awesome taste (me). But would the flickery lure of the motion picture pull her further into the wacky world o’comics or increase her tendency to shun them and make me hide them in the garage like bodies.

GREEN LANTERN
A trailer for DC’s sole blockbuster attempt featuring Ryan Reynolds as a man with a magic wishing ring, the personality of a frat boy and lots of CGI. Also apparently featuring the worst performance by a female actor I have ever seen in a trailer. Obligatory Good Actor(s) Slumming It: Mark Strong, Tim Robbins.
LT: Will we be seeing this? ML: No.LT: Why? ML: Ryan Reynolds is in it. I can’t stand that man.
(Explanatory note: Ever since ML was foully disappointed by the third BLADE movie she has blamed the woefulness of the experience experience entirely on the presence of Ryan Reynolds. He is not welcome in our house.)

THOR
A trailer for a film about Marvel’s Jack Kirby Norse mythology derived character for which Jack Kirby’s estate will probably receive no money. But then neither will the people of Norway. Basically shows you how the entire film will go. Does feature The Destroyer moving about and, uh, destroying stuff which made my pupils dilate (that’s good). Obligatory Good Actor Slumming It: Anthony Hopkins.
LT: Will we be seeing this? ML: No LT: Why? ML: Those people in the BNP wear Thor T-shirts? LT: Really? ML: Yes. I’ve seen them on TV. LC: I did not know that. Wait? Jack Kirby’s Thor? ML: I don’t know! Just Thor. LC: Jack Kirby nearly lost his fingers and toes to frostbite fighting National Socialism. He took lives and woke up screaming throughout his life due to his experiences. His work for the next few decades can pretty much be summed up as one man’s attempt to prevent the rise of such life denying evil via the only means he had at his disposal! ML:They still wear Thor T-shirts and I have no interest in this. LC: It’s not Jack Kirby’s Thor! ML: Stop being weird and let me go do something useful.

CAPTAIN AMERICA
A trailer for a film about Marvel’s Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s WW2 birthed star spangled time tossed Avenger for which Jack Kirby’s estate will probably receive no money. I won’t lie; it looked pretty okay. Obligatory Good Actor(s) Slumming It: Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L Jackson.
LC: Will we be seeing this? ML: No. LC: Why? ML: I hate all that “O, isn’t America just great!” imperialistic nonsense. Hate it! Hate! It! LC: It’s Jack Kirby, he… ML: DON’T! LC: It isn’t imperialism. Cap stands for The Dream! The Dream that transcends national boundaries and race! The Dream that all men can be equal and live under the same great sky as they build a world based on tolerance, decency and peace! ML: He’s called “Captain America”! LC: Looks like he’ll be killing Nazis! Ml: Then you can watch him kill Nazis on your own.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
A trailer for a Marvel film about the young X-Men. Looked okay. Can’t remember who the good actor slumming it was.
ML: Don’t ask! I hate it when they “young” things up! Ooooh it’s the X-Men but they’re all young and s*xy! Why isn’t it just the X-Men! I liked those X-Men films! Why do they have to do this? LC: It’s because Hugh Jackman isn’t in it isn’t it? ML: I like Hugh Jackman. LC: You didn’t like that one where he was flying trough space with a bald head and a dead tree. ML: I liked Hugh Jackman in it.
Yes, those are pretty much the words what we said, although I have made myself look cleverer and more articulate. Other than that though…pretty much what happened.

Are you looking forward to any of them? Will they make you buy more comics? Will they make more people buy comics?

Do you SEE!

(For people under 60 The Wild Geese was like The Expendables but instead of ‘80s action stars with faces like surgical roadkill and bad joints it had English thesps who could drink their own bodyweight in alcohol before breakfast and then still hit the mark. Today they would be worshipped as Gods.)

FRANK MILLER - lifts the hem of his historically accurate man-skirt and gives you a peek at his dangling 300 sequel XERXES! This way everyone can practice getting upset at the sight of it before it even hoves fully into view!

HOWARD VICTOR CHAYKIN – writes and draws a new episodic serial fiction. There are two ways to tell if HVC is going to stop watching DIAGNOSIS MURDER long enough to actually produce something someone other than a lifelong fan will like: 1) He’ll be writing AND drawing and2) It will contain the phrase “moral cripple”. He’s writing AND drawing this. Dunno about 2) yet.

NEAL ADAMS – expands his mind until the crust gives a little and parps out an all-new tale. I think it’s called Blood or something. It doesn’t matter. It will certainly be some kind of thing if BATMAN:ODYSSEY is anything to go by. Yes, he’s writing AND drawing! And by ‘writing’ I’m not even sure what I mean.

MICHAEL T GILBERT – resurrects MR. MONSTER! How long has it been? Too long, baby! Everyone loves MR MONSTER except people who haven’t read MR MONSTER. If you buy DARK HORSE PRESENTS you’ll read MR MONSTER and you’ll love MR MONSTER too!

RICHARD CORBEN – will be doing something creepy and gibbous no doubt. It will probably involve men with muscles like loaves of bread and ladies with knockers like space hoppers. It will not look like other things but it will look like this: awesome!

HARLAN ELLISON – writes a ‘prose piece’ I don’t know what that is? A story? A list of his favourite dry cleaners? An appreciation of Lady Ga Ga? It doesn’t matter. It’s HARLAN freakin’ ELLISON!

CARLA SPEED McNEIL - gifts us with an all-new colour FINDER story. I don’t know owt about that. Warren Ellis said FINDER was good if anyone listens to Warren Ellis. Anyway, I’ll be finding out, won’t I?

PAUL CHADWICK – unveils a new CONCRETE story. I don’t know about this either. I bet OKOliver does. It looks like an OKOliver joint. Ask him next time you’re in OKCOMICS! He flipping loves it I bet!

There’s some other stuff as well including a STAR WARS CRIMSON EMPIRE story. My 5 year old likes STAR WARS. So good news there for any 5 year olds who are thinking of picking this up – STAR WARS!

Oh, the age of the contributors is deterring you? Well, you could think about it this way: each of these folks has decades of experience in honing and crafting graphic sequential entertainment in a highly idiosyncratic style which, while it may have cost some of them a high personal price, has in any decent evaluation only been to the betterment of the art form as a whole.

Or you could remember that the defining aspect of old people is that they are old and you don’t get old by being weak; you get old by surviving! And as Elvis sang, before cunningly avoiding old age by dying in an embarrassing fashion, Only The Strong Survive! These are the survivors. These are the strong. Comics strong. Nourish yourself on the hard won fruits of their labour. Or don’t, it’s your money.

DARK HORSE PRESENTS #1. 80pgs. April 2011. £6.99 (probably)
