Employment Opportunity at OK Comics.

There's a very good chance that there will be a job vacancy at OK Comics in the coming weeks and months. There is potential for us to employ one full time, or two part time members of staff.

OK Comics is an award winning specialist retailer, so all our staff must be comic book experts. A casual interest in comics is great, but our customers are interested in a very extensive variety of comics, and we must be ready for them all.
We face a wide range of shopper enquiries every day and all our staff must be equipped with knowledge of all aspects of the publishing and distribution of comics and graphic novels, so a good working knowledge of this is preferable.

Duties will include:
- Working the cash register.
- Dealing with customers instore and online.
- Cleaning.
- Unpacking, sorting and pricing deliveries of stock.
- Packing and despatching mail order goods.
- Recording and monitoring sales.
and all other day to day aspects of a busy high street retail outlet.

Candidates should be aware that retail often involves long hours, and unexpected extra work, so flexibility is very important. Applicants must also be technically competent and have a good working knowledge of the internet, ebay and online social networking, have a good telephone manner and, obviously, great interpersonal skills.
Applicants should ideally, though not essentially, have retail, customer service experience preferably in the book, comic or record industry.

The successful applicant or applicants will be friendly and outgoing without being overbearing; keen to help encourage the general public to read comics.
While OK Comics doesn't have a uniform or strict dress policy, the successful candidate must be clean, smart and have good hygiene.

All staff at OK Comics, past and present, have dedicated themselves to expanding their product knowledge, reading books outside their usual comfort zone in order to increase their awareness and serve customers better.
Any new member of staff must continue this trend.

If you think you are able to add to OK Comics high level of customer service and product knowledge, please send a CV, including a brief covering letter, to shop@okcomics.co.uk
The covering letter must say how long you've been collecting and regularly reading comics and graphic novels. We also want to know who your favourite publisher is, and why; what's your favourite comic of all time; why you want to work at OK Comics and what changes you'd like to implement if you get the job.
IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE A COVERING LETTER INCLUDING THIS INFORMATION YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE PROCCESSED.

Please be aware that even when we're not advertising for staff we are bombarded with CV's, resumes and applications, so I expect that we will only be able to contact the applicants we will want to interview.

Thank You.

Cheers, Jared
OK

Over the years OK Comics has developed a few signature series'. Comics that all the staff, and loads of our customers seem to enjoy. Series' that continue to sell and sell, and pick up more readers as time goes on...
The graphic novel series of The Walking Dead is one of our best selling ranges. It's about a guy called Rick and a group of other survivors making a new life for themselves in a post apocalyptical wasteland. There are sometimes zombies.
While the story started out as pretty much a man vs zombie series, it quickly moved away from that. The main threat to our survivors comes from other desperate survivors. It remains quite realistic. Never feels like Mad Max.

Looking at the series as a whole, it does have some very quiet spells but they're often punctuated by shocking horror.
It's still ongoing...

Very soon there will be a TV series of The Walking Dead. All advance footage I've seen make it look very faithful to comic.

If you've never read the series, OK Comics is making it as easy as possible to try it out...
The monthly issues are £2.25 and the series is pretty regular.
The paperback graphic novels (reprinting six issues each) are £10.99 each.
The hardback graphic novels (reprinting 12 issues each) are £24.99 each.

To help promote the series we now stock issue 1 for 50p... the first graphic novel for £5.00... and The Walking Dead Compendium, which reprints the first 48 issues or first eight paperbacks, for £39.99 (that's about 83p per issue).

You're welcome.

A couple of months ago I went public with our woes. OK Comics had hit tough times because of the building renovation work going on around our retail outlet in Leeds City Centre.
Upon hearing of our troubles a great many people stepped up to help, spreading the word, buying stuff from our shop and online. We saw regular customers buying more stuff than normal, old customers coming back to us for the first time in ages and new customers who'd only just heard about us coming in for the first time.

It helped massively.
We're definitely through the worst of it, but, though sales are picking up again, almost back to normal, the quiet time hurt us so bad that we've still got quite a lot of making up to do.
But I'm confident that, with continued support from our awesome customers, we'll continue to supply comics and graphic novels for the foreseeable future.

I'd like to thank EVERYONE involved in getting word out, everyone who blogged about it, everyone who tweeted or re-tweeted about it.
I'd like to thank EVERYONE who came down and spent money. I was absolutely humbled by the support.

Thanks to everyone on this forum, and those checking in with us through facebook and twitter.
Thanks to Stephen Billings, Lee Scott Alasdair Stuart, Dave Balme, Stephen Holland at Page 45, everyone at Diamond Comic Distributors, Elliot Turner, Mike Bradbury, Simon Smith, Neil Donaldson, Jonathan Ross for re-tweeting about us to his thousands of followers and becoming our most famous customer, Rich Johnson for his piece on Bleeding Cool which exposed a lot of people to the situation, Richard Pride, Marc Ellerby, Gwen and Jamie, Peter Wood the property manager acting on behalf of our landlord, Bryan Talbot for his continuing good taste in graphic novels,, Alex Bales, Jason Thompson, Robert Cooper, all the guys at Geek Syndicate and Down the Tubes, Tom and Simon at Leeds Guide, and John Baron for his gamechanging piece for The Guardian.
Special thanks have to go to John Kane and Carl Helstrom for donating their back issues to us. Your sacrifice hasn't gone unnoticed.

This little message on this little website probably isn't enough everyone knows that we felt the impact of their involvement.

Cheers, Jared
OK

About two months ago, when we were in the middle of that building work / OK Comics in jeopardy nightmare, I decided to go through all our hundreds of customer orders and contact anybody who hadn't been in for a few months.
The response was amazing, so many people came in and picked up their stuff straight away that it was a massive boost to the weeks sales.
We had a few people apologise for letting things build up. They told us it'd be best for us to put the stuff out on sale and cancel their ongoing order.
A lot of people got in touch with us to let us know that they couldn't come in right away, but they'd be in at the end of July to pick everything up. Most people did that.
Clearing out the standing order boxes, with customers help, was a big step in keeping OK Comics alive.

But, unfortunately there are a few people who've told us they're coming in soon, but never show up. Some long standing customers who just seem to have disappeared!
I know times are tough all over but no phone call, no email, no facebook comment, no tweet! I suppose not picking up your comics for four or five months does send a clear message that you're not coming back.

So, it's with heavy heart that I have to pull a few previously awesome customers orders. The stock's now so old that most of it will be filed in with our 50p back issues.
Thanks for costing OK Comics money guys!

Massive thanks to everybody else who continually supports OK Comics standing order system by purchasing the stuff you order.
