I have despise long boxes. They're flimsy, impracticle, and for someone like me with ocd unordered :-)
I've been looking at alternatives and decided on these filing draw things from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40107872 I can get about two years of comics in each drawer, when they're full I pop the comics into a box file, which also holds about 24 issues.
I was wondering if anyone else used an alternative to long boxes??
I use longboxes too and don't have much problem keeping my OCD in order, however I'd love some of those longboxes that work like drawers, never seen them for sale over here though.
One day I'd love a set up like Jonathan Ross, where all his comics are lined up on shelves.
OK have the drawer ones?! I'm trembling with excitement! How much? How stackable? Anyone want 26 used longboxes depending on the answers to the previous questions?
i use long boxes...i have no idea for how much longer though. the cats keep clawing and chewing on them. and being sick on them. now there's criticism. i might look at getting some of the drawer ones when these have finally had it.
The drawer boxes are pretty excellent. Not only do they stack four or five high, and have a handy feature that allows you to carry one box in one hand, but each drawer also has dividers, so if the box is half full the comics don't flop about. They also remove the need for backing boards, which'll save you about £20 per box. The dividers create individual sections, so you can designate each section to one title, and, as you buy new issues or collect back issues, it becomes really easy to add new acquisitions. They are made from about 17 separate parts, so we sell them either flat packed, or pre-built.
I got one at the weekend - they are pretty good - looks like you can store less then a standard "small box" but you obviously get the advantages of the "draw". They are pretty easy to put together - although it did take me a while to figure out what the divider's were!
I'll be very happy after a few more, and then I won't have to shift heavy boxes around just to look for/put away one comic!
My suggestion is to keep in longboxes all the stuff that isn't going to be added to on a regular basis - and then get drawers for the stuff where you keep adding the next monthly issue, or new mini-series, or whatever. Essentially splitting your collection into active and inactive titles. Once you stop getting a title, or it gets cancelled you can shift it into the "inactive" longboxes and make room for new comics.
Having become recently unemployed I've found I have a lot of spare time between filling out job applications and so have decided to start re-organising my collection, which is becoming a bit of a nightmare. Few days ago I took everything out of the boxes and re-arranged them only to find about a box worth of comics suddenly with no home, which was confusing. I've always done it so "inactive" titles are stacked at the bottom in full boxes and "active" titles are in half empty boxes at the top, so I think getting some of these DrawerBoxes when I have some money will be a must.
That sounds labour intensive in the set-up stage, but a great idea in theory. Maybe I should empty all my boxes into the middle of a room and sort through them in one go.
I took over the dining room with it all and thankfully got it all done before my girlfriend got home, she's already kind enough to "allow" me to use the spare room as my comic/toy/computer room. Annoyingly I think I'm gonna need to sort it all out again and get it right this time. Or just buy more boxes. It's a good job I have a slight OCD about these things which means I actually enjoy organising stuff!
I bought the Comic Collector Live database, but I log them as I buy them, so there's 23 boxes of stuff to catch up on. The more I think, the more the idea of emptying them all out appeals - it'll never be perfect as I've too many ongoing titles, but I'd at least have several boxes of X-Men, Punisher and Spidey together...
