About two months ago, when we were in the middle of that building work / OK Comics in jeopardy nightmare, I decided to go through all our hundreds of customer orders and contact anybody who hadn't been in for a few months. The response was amazing, so many people came in and picked up their stuff straight away that it was a massive boost to the weeks sales. We had a few people apologise for letting things build up. They told us it'd be best for us to put the stuff out on sale and cancel their ongoing order. A lot of people got in touch with us to let us know that they couldn't come in right away, but they'd be in at the end of July to pick everything up. Most people did that. Clearing out the standing order boxes, with customers help, was a big step in keeping OK Comics alive.
But, unfortunately there are a few people who've told us they're coming in soon, but never show up. Some long standing customers who just seem to have disappeared! I know times are tough all over but no phone call, no email, no facebook comment, no tweet! I suppose not picking up your comics for four or five months does send a clear message that you're not coming back.
So, it's with heavy heart that I have to pull a few previously awesome customers orders. The stock's now so old that most of it will be filed in with our 50p back issues. Thanks for costing OK Comics money guys!
Massive thanks to everybody else who continually supports OK Comics standing order system by purchasing the stuff you order.
I don't really get people who don't pick their stuff up regularly. I think it's a bit disrespectful and insulting to you guys really, it's just common courtesy to let you know if they're not going to be around for a while or if they want their orders dropping. Maybe it's not that common though?
I don't really get people who don't pick their stuff up regularly - as soon as I know Spidey-Hulk vs Thingy-Hulk in Secret Hulk War Hulky #8 is out I dash down...
Actually, I often feel bad for wasting the OK Team's time in pulling my order as I am in almost every weekend anyway and am not yet so decrepit that I cannot grab the issues I want, but I assume having knowledge of what people want helps with ordering? Please tell me I'm not a burden!
You're not a burden. I secretly wish everybody pre-ordered their comics. That way, I know exactly how many to order and there's never any excess stock left over and nobody's ever disappointed (unless they read SuperHulk vs different coloured SuperHulk).
I can't understand this on both counts ~ customers letting their SOs build up and then not picking them up or not telling the shop that they no longer want a particular title/titles. Come on folks. It's courteous and the jolly staff at OK don't bite, even if you're cancelling comic titles (as I know of late). And remember if you don't, you're basically costing the best comic shop in Leeds money.
We often have a lot of people, usually students, who go missing over summer. We understand this, and we're happy (not ecstatic, but you know what I mean) to wait until the new term starts to see if they come back. And we totally understand that times are tough, and a lot of people only buy comics on pay day. And if you're having particularly tough month, it may have to wait till the next pay day. That's fine, just keep us up to date with what's going on... But if you've requested that I reserve comics for you, and I've ordered and paid for them, and you don't pick them up for five months please don't think this is OK.
All that said, we do love providing this service. Is Comics the only industry where this happens... does Waterstones reserve every book in a series, or by a particular writer for you? Does Crash or Jumbo have a list of your favorites behind their counter so they can be sure that you don't miss something? Maybe they do... I don't know. Do they?
It's a brilliant service & one I am massively grateful for as i can't get into the town centre reliably each month. Even though I am a big culprit for leaving my orders too long. But what I like best is to sneak in Ninja style collect my order & then send in a parent/guardian or spouse a few hours later to ask for the same order just to freak you out when you can't find it!!!!
In the interests of cathartic admissions, as well as feeling bad about having the standing order when I almost invariably go in every week, I also feel bad about making any additions to the list and feel double bad about taking anything off it, even though Jared has actively tried to stop me buying some of the worst Marvel books (which is also a service you don't get in other stores!)
So, I maintain my own list at home and try to only pester OK after a big event that sees the cancellation/introduction of loads of books.
