    Hi,
I want to pick up some Manga but I don't know where to start. I've leafed through books in shops but don't know what's good or bad, what's gross or cute etc.

What are your suggestions for a newbie - not into gore but also don't want a slushy love story
    Cheers!
    P
  1.
I'd start with the Daddy of the lot - AKIRA! Simply one of the greatest comics ever made.

If you want something a bit more recent I'd recommend Deathnote.
  2.
Dark Horse Astro Boy reprints and One Piece (which reads far better than the badly written/dubbed Western version of the cartoon series).

I have been reading Ghost In The Shell. Its a single volume, but it seems to be taking me six months to read! Its a great, involving piece with a suprising amount of depth in relation to the application of future technologies that seriously requires a good grasp of science to get the most out of. I can also recommend the Anime Ghost In The Shell : Stand Alone Complex series one & two, which is largely based on the stories of the original Manga, and is beautifully animated.

I recently started on three Manga series...
20th Century boys, about a group of childhood friends in the 70's and 80's who all meet up again at around the turn of the millennium. They suspect that one of their friends may be the leader of a religious cult and about to trigger Armageddon!!!
Biomega, fast paced, futuristic action adventure with zombies.
    and
Pluto. Somebody is killing/destroying the worlds greatest robots, and it's up to the worlds greatest robot detective to figure out what's going on, but surely he's on the death list too...

All are good, not for kids, but good.
