I have just reread Kingdom Come by Alex Ross + Mark Waid At the time it was amazing however I dont think its aged well so I returned to Uncle Sam same again wordy long winded and overratted So looked over Justice maxiserries and its ok. So my therory is this people are confussed great art masking week stories
Yes. Sometimes. And sometimes weak art undermines great stories (see: Grant Morrison's stuff.) Sometimes the planets are in alignment and you get ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. But not often. No, not often. The art of making Corporate Comics is compromised by the very nature of its production and consequently so is the reading experience thereof. Those are some thoughts, I think, well I thought them at least.
I think Alex Ross art is great, but as with Greg Land's, the more you look at it, the more you notice that the images are clearly from other sources. This isn't a bad thing, but in some areas the use of photo models is really obvious (that can driver in Marvels instantly springs to mind). Interesting that you find Uncle Sam 'wordy and long winded'. I sometimes wish comics were a bit more wordy than they are now. What comics do you rate, Hes2010? I'm just curious, because clearly the stuff thats held in high regard by many doesn't appear to be your thing at all. Not that this is a bad thing, I've frequently come to stuff that people cite as being 'amazing' and found it to be not quite what I was expecting.
Planet Hulk a brilliantly imagined world that makes you want to belive in aliens almost shakespearean tragedy in the end World War Hulk just what you want from the hulk planet threatening dammage and still rooting for him Grandville 1+2 great story that draws you in cant pick those up unless i have the time to read the whole book + multilayered can't help but look for old tv comic characters making a come bake snowy/rupertbear etc Alice in Sunderland Completly hypnootic +educational dont'confuse the genre with the medium Cash I See a Darkness beautifuly drawn and expresses music in pictures a unexpected delight. Gotham Central C.S.I. in Gotham what more do you need to know Superman Red Son russian superman Batman Long Halloween brilliantly stylised plot that keeps you gessing and creators that are at the top of there game Batman Dark knight Returns colostraphobic in delivery brutal batman beating up superman what more can you ask for Hart of Hush filling out a character that needed more of a back story Hush a new villain in the batman rouges gallery that has more the 5mins spent on him New frontier great alomost silver age telling of all our favourites Parker the hunter, man with a get away face and the out fit the story and art marry so well so evcotive of sixties gangsters (i think iwasnt there) but cool Catwoman Selinas Big Score Parker for super heros
Sorry you did ask a comic fans dream question there
heh, dream question indeed :) I was a bit disappointed by Long Halloween. Not because its a poor effort, but just that I guessed the villain of the piece quite early on. Anything invloving Harvey Dent in Batman is always guilty of signposting a really obvious plot development without even trying. Its so difficult to remove the guy from what we all know will happen to him, the luckless sap. Hush was the same. Beautifully drawn by Jim Lee, but the giveaway is there from the get go with the arrival of a character we're supposed to believe has known Bruce his entire life despite not appearing anywhere else ever beforehand. A bit of a one trick pony, I didn't really think Hush needed any further 'development'. The whole 'Hush' palaver was also in part responsible for resurrecting the quite dead with missing brains and everything Jason Todd. Something no one demanded or thought was necessary, even for cheap theatrics. Cheers, DC. Just my opinion, of course...
I don’t mind Alex Ross’ art. It’s okay. Sometimes it’s a nice change but, for me, it has problems communicating motion and the level of detail can quickly make a page look cluttered. I like his Captain ‘Shazam’ Marvel pictures. They’re nice. Um, that’s about the strength of my feelings on Alex Ross. He’s okay.
There you go! Good art masking weak writing: Jeph Loeb. Dear God, that guy’s stuff, it’s like he thinks sense is for other people or something. What is it with that guy? What did sense ever do to him? It’s like he’s just openly going at sense in a pub car park armed with a broken bottle of claptrap. Leave it, Jeph, it’s had enough! Christ, Jeph, it’s just getting ugly now it’s barely got a face, leave it, man! I guess I like Jeph Loeb like hes2010 likes Grant Morrison. Less, probably. Definitely less.
Bryan Talbot and Darwyn Cooke, however, don’t get enough kudos. I don’t care if they get kudos by the bushel and their ears ring from a constant chorus of acclaim. It still isn’t enough.
ok will give you robin did'nt need to come back but hush had some great moments and arent all comic creators guilty of trying to tye in there stories to the start of their particular unviverse Grant Morrison had so many references to tomas wayne and supposedly had been putting subliminal messages into bruce for years just to validate his story. And now supposed to swallow Thomas Wayne met Jor El. Retconning is just some thing that happens in comics we just have to accept that and admit its what makes the medium great
By the way what ever happened to Gilda Dent she conffesses at the end of long halloween and then disapears
The identity of Hush was so obvious that I was sure it must be a red herring and the big reveal was going to be a suprise, you could then read back and see all the subtle clues that pointed to the "real" Hush.
But it wasn't. Jeph Loeb and subtle are stangers to each other.
Jeph Loeb is Michael Bay for comics - big, stupid and obvious with occasionally entertaining and occasionally insulting tendencies.
Grant Morrison is...actually, a comparison escapes me. Someone who is sometimes great but who thinks he's always great but actually has sometimes disappeared miles up his own bum. David Lynch?
Jeph Loeb is the Uwe Boll of comics. Okay Lee, that sounds fair r.e. Grant Morrison but I'd like you to leave David Lynch alone right now, young man! Desist! I'll not have a bad word said about that gentleman! Land sakes!
I actually wasn't happy with using Lynch as a comparison as I love him and think he's great (although I'm trying not to remember INLAND EMPIRE as I type this), whereas I often find Morrison to be tiresome (although I did love Zenith and We3).
Mark Millar is more like Spielberg - calculatedly and persistently populist but clearly good at what he does.
Animal Man, Arkham Asylum, Batman, Batman & Robin, Final Crisis, Doom Patrol, All Star Super-Man, Seven Soldiers, The Invisibles, WE3, Kill Your Boyfriend, Seaguy, Vinanarama, New X-Men.
The CV speaks for itself. The best writer of comics working today.
All Star Supes was ace. The X-Men stuff was a jumbled mess of ideas, some of which were great, some less so. He needs a strong editor to calm him down. Given I'm predisposed to liking all X books, the fact I wasn't very impressed does suggest they weren't that great (or that I'm a tasteless fool who doesn't know great when he sees it).
Hell, I’m sorry about this, particularly as you were so gracious towards Mr. David Lynch, but Mark Millar is nothing like Spielberg, Lee! Oh, I know that’s how he likes to think of himself but I like to think of myself as Warren Oates gifted with a schlong like a Burmese Python but that doesn’t mean I am. I’ll keep it brief for all our sakes -four words: Mark Millar’s Schindler’s List. Wouldn’t really be the same would it? Honestly I’m no Spielberg fan by any means but I still think you’re doing him a disservice. Technically Spielberg’s a genius and everything he does is incredibly well made, yes, even when it makes blood seep from my ears with its emotionally manipulative vacuity.
I think a better comparison would be Paul Andersen (The Event Horizon bloke, I may have his name wrong, who cares?) whose films consist of high concept ideas (which often resemble other people’s ideas with the serial numbers filed off) that disguise the deficiencies in every other area with bombast and empty spectacle. Enjoyable enough for what they are but they aren’t ever really as good as they sound on the box. Christ, I hate talking about Mark Millar. Because that’s. Just. What. He. Wants. You can say Mark Millar is like Orson Welles & Martin Scorcese combined, but better, if you want now, Lee. I’m not talking about him anymore. I feel soiled inside now. Not in a good way.
And since I’m clearly unable to avoid upsetting everyone before 2010 ends I’d have to say that in Cranston Towers Grant Morrison, sadly, isn’t the best writer working in comics because Alan Moore endures! Nay, The Crown shall not adorn the wee baldy head of yon Scots pretender until Moore’s beard lies still and untroubled by his living breath! The Moore! The Moore! Bend your knee and kiss his rings!
As a pathetic and transparent sop to try and win everyone’s affections back I will say that Morrison’s X-Men confused me totally by the end and I still don’t ‘get’ The Invisibles (We are he and he is we and we are all the enemy? Is that it? It’s all us? Was that it?) and Final Crisis and his Batman run are massively compromised, fatally so for some folks. But. He has ideas and really, I think that’s important. So shine on Grant Morrison! Shine on!
Mark Millar's Schindler's List does sound bad, I grant you Senor Cranston. But, by way of revenge for your merciless savaging of my ill-considered comparison, I'll boldly state this: Mark Millar's Schindler's List would be at least 45% better than Frank Miller's Will Eisner's The Spirit was!
I cant think of a film maker to compare to Millar, Anderson & Bay mostly work with other peoples toys, and Spielberg just seems to live off Star Wars (but Falling Skies looks interesting). Millar though seems to make comics with simple premises(What if Batman was the Joker? What if the Villains won? What if Super Heros were real?)(and usually done before) and throw in lots of death and Mature content... note* I have only read Wanted (which I really like), and seen Kick-Ass & Wanted so cant judge
Woah! What's with all the Spielburg bashing!? He truly is one of cinema's greats:-
Duel Jaws Raiders of the Lost Ark ET Temple of Doom Empire of The Sun Catch Me If You Can Minority Report Munich
That's awesome!! I think only Scorsese can compete for sustained quality over such a long period of time.
