While DC are quite vocally pushing their new range of fifty-two comics, now in it's second month, Marvel have been quietly, subtly, launching their own range of new, entry level, series. With one or two starting each month, including a relaunch/reboot/restart of their Ultimate line, Marvel now have a bold selection of comics ideal for new readers. And there are more to come before the end of the year.
- Annihilators #1 Writers Abnett and Lanning set up a fresh series bringing their cosmic characters down to Earth.
- Captain America #1 Issue one is almost like a sequel to the recent movie. Nick Fury is there, Steve Rogers is friends with Dugan. The real star of the show is Steve McNiven's amazing artwork.
- Daredevil #1 Matt Murdock returns to a more old school, fun comic book. Gone is the grim and gritty descent into mental breakdown, Mark Waid balances a modern crime comic with classic marvel wackiness perfectly.
FF #1 Future Foundation? First Family? Fantastic Five? Johnny Storm is dead but do the remaining members of the Fantastic Four need a replacement? And who will it be? Spider-Man? Doctor Doom? Or somebody closer to home?
Ghost Rider #1 Marvels bike riding spirit of vengeance is back, but British writer Rob Williams has reinvented HIM as you've never seen HER before.
- Moon Knight #1 The fan favourite creative team of Bendis and Maleev bring us a darker, more troubled Moon Knight.
- Punisher #1 Not quite as brutal and 'adults only' as the Marvel Max Punisher, but it's exactly what you want from a Marvel Universe based crime series. Greg Rucka know crime comics!
- Mighty Thor #1 Released at the same time as the movie, this is a pretty cosmic Thor comic featuring Silver Surfer and Galactus.
- Fear Itself #1 It doesn't matter who your favourite Marvel character is, they're probably in the large scale Marvel 'event' series.
- Brilliant #1 Bendis, again, and Mark Bagley's creator owned series. Set outside the Marvel Universe it's the story of a group of college students who invent superpowers.
- Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1 I just call it Ultimate Avengers. Is that OK? Nick Fury's leading a worldwide network of heroes solving international political problems.
- Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1 Crosses over quite closely with Ultimate Ultimates, following Clint Barton on a solo mission.
- Ultimate Comics X-Men #1 For the first time in a long time it's about a small group of mutants who vow to do good in a society that fears and hates them.
- Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 Peter Parker is dead. This is the origin story of a new Spider 'Man', with similar, but strangely different powers. And the kid's a really good character too.
As of writing this we have all the first issues of these series, and loads of the subsequent issues too.
Coming Soon.
- Uncanny X-Men #1 A brand new series featuring Cyclops following his own path as the main X-Men leader.
- Wolverine and the X-Men #1 After leaving Cyclops, Wolverine now leads his own group of rogue X-Men, written by Jason Aaron.
- Avenging Spider-Man #1 Joe Madureira provides the artwork for this new series focusing on Spidey's adventures with the Avengers.
- Incredible Hulk #1 Jason Aaron has put a pretty dark spin on both Punisher an Wolverine recently, now he takes on the Hulk! With art by Marc Silvestri.
Avengers 1959 #1 Howard Chaykin doing superheroes right. Half Mad Men, half Avengers, all awesome.
Have I missed any? Which have been your favourites?
Well, I've bought/will be buying all of those (except Brilliant - how did I not know about this? Must get! I'll come to OK today!) and many have been very good. The new Punisher series has started very strongly, with DD just behind and all the Ultimate books have been engaging (and I'm not a hopeless fan of the Ultimate stuff like I am the 616 universe). FF has been really good, too. At the other end of the scale, Ghost Rider is a pointless, incoherent mess.
I am totally looking forward to the new X-Men books, but, as mentioned above - I am a loser.
Seriously people - buy the new DD book. I had reservations about it as it felt like they were tossing out the Bendis and Brubraker grim n' gritty years and I've never been taken with the art by Martin or...that other artist on the book...but I was wrong. The new DD kicks ass and is better than any of the ten New 52 books that I have read thus far. Waid's writing is spot on (l'il pun for anyone who has read #1) and the book is just a joy to read.
Lee's right! The new DAREDEVIL comic is peaches and cream supreme! And that's coming from someone who is glad (GLAD! I say) that it felt like they were tossing out the B*ndis and Brubaker mediocre and gibberish years. Also I think the art kicks arse. So, if Lee and me both like DAREDEVIL then what are the chances that you won't? Small.
AVENGERS 1959 #1 by Howard Victor Chaykin was very enjoyable. But you knew I'd say that.
