I just read that Ultimate Gambit is coming back in the Ultimate X-Men series, even though he appeared to die and they dug out his body.
I got me thinking how no major characters seem to die in comics. They always seem to come back.
Sure a few minor charcters die and the new Robin got killed off after that fan vote but does anyone really major ever die and not come back in some capacity?
Anyone know any?
What are your thoughts on it? Does the inability for characters to reman dead in comics spoil it for you or make it because in real life you can't come back?
Robin actually came back recently too, and he was thought unresurectable. The most unreseractable character of all time was actually Bucky Barnes from Captain America. Marvel had a strict policy to the fact. But now he's back and staring in his very own Civil War spin off.
do you know sometimes i wish that there would be no comic resurrections, because if they all come back i'll have less and less 'gasp' moments when a character dies. but then sometimes i agree with a character being resurrected.
but i think i enjoy certain series' more if know that dead people stay dead. it makes it more permanent.
i think with marvel at least a lot of the smaller name characters stat dead, especially all this no-names that are dying in civil war and front line.
it makes me wonder why characters in these universes don't attempt to undo deaths themselves when they know it can be done. that was something addressed more than once on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
but then even if they kill your favourite character, he/she will appear in an ultimate comic or some alternate universe story before long anyway.
Hawkeye got a cameo in Marvel Adventures spider-man 20 (written by peter david). i do read em myself before letting my little bro have em.
so whats the most annoying method of undoing a death for everyone here? the main four i can think of
-turns out they were never really dead in the first place e.g. Colossus and Sherlock Holmes - clone - parallel universe counterpart comes to visit - or the good ol fashioned resurrection as favoured by buffy summers and jesus christ.
JMS will be writing Thor post Civi War and i doubt they'll be using the clone for that series. so he'll be revived soon enough.
Hawkeye was back BACK BACK! in She-Hulk recently. Or was he? Support this fine comic and have a read.
The best way to bring back a character is to have someone PUNCH reality so HARD that everything changes. Genius! Alan Moore was a piker when it came to big ideas.
They should clone Cap and Iron Man so we can have even more Civil War spin-offs. Clone everybody and we can have Civil war after Civil War, and even Civil War between the same characters. With spin-offs. Forever. And ever. Hands off Millar, my idea.
Anyway Hawkeye isn't dead because his death was caused by an illusion. He's lying over the wall at Avengers Mansion thinking "I'm dead." Probably in a heavily leafed bush as no one has found him yet. Actually he's been there a while so he probably is dead by now.
I can't think of anyone who hasn't come back. Even Aunt Harriet is back in Batman. Oh! The entire cast of X-Static are still dead aren't they? Shame.
Hey hey! Back from me travels down south and i come back to a great thread! Nice one Walkin!
I think it wrangles more when the writers really ham up the death of a character only to bring them back later. If they brought back the Grey family from the massacre i think that would be unacceptable. But the writers are obliged to bring back charatcers, aren't they? I mean the writer don't actually WRITE the comics do they? They just put a story round the ideas that the sales/marketing guys think are a good idea ... surely.
Of course, Marvel are past-masters at covering their backs when it comes to things like death. You only have to look at "The End" arc to reliase that they can kill off the entire team as often as they like knowing they can all come back somehow because they all appear in "The End".
Worst resurrection methods? Hmm, Phoenix? Need i say more? Actually i take that back, the latest arc is looking rather good ...
But Phoenix was always coming back, and always will. If Phoenix didn't come back she would be called Pigeon, or something.
Or am I missing the point, is it a particular Phoenix resurrection you had in mind? I could very well be missing the point here as the only X-Men runs I've read are Byrne/Claremont, Milligan and Morrison. Apologies to the legions of X-Men fans out there for my lack of X-Men lore.
Hey, yeah had a great time. Drove to Cheltenham to see some friends for a few days, then over to Cambridge, up to York and then back to Leeds. 5 days of over eating, over drinking and talking like it was going out of fashion!!
Ah, i see what you mean about the Phoenix!! You are of course right - my beef was purely that instead of Phoenix coming back every say 200 years she/it comes back every mmm, 6 months in some form. It just feels like a dead horse that Marvel are flogging whereas it should be like a party piece that Marvel should bring out to impress on very special occassions, like weddings, bar mitzvahs and deaths (did you notice the irony?)
aye, seems there are quite a few issues about "Death".
I get what you mean about "The End" arc. First I thought it was the final X-Men story but then its actually set in an alternative reality. Same with the so called final Wolverine adventure.
I think in one alternative reality, possibly in a What If? comics, a band of Marvel heros got togther to fight "Death" and won, and from then on, no one ever died.
Don't know what the opinion of that is.
I certainly wouldn't want a favorite charcter of mine killed off but then again, if people don't die then it just takes off the realism and makes it seem more fantastical then it already is.
I get what you mean about the Phoenix, I do';t even knwo what number of Phoenix's/Jean Grey's they are up to now.
It also appears that some terriorist organisation(s) in the Marvel Universe can bring people back as well, as far as I read in the death of NorthStar. So as long as your 'super' enough you can come back, sorry Sue Dibny/Gwen Stacy you just don't have the credentials. Also does anyone who is reading 52 and/or Justice League of America know if Booster Gold is still dead?
Come to think of it the 1st Dead@17 came to that subject right off the bat with the main character dying then coming back to life, don't know if that's like a statment or something that you're not a real hero until you've died.(So Spider-Man and Superman are shoe-ins.)
Also a fitting X-Men parody all about character deaths, called X-Men: Death Becomes Them http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/218160 He's also made other Marvel and DC parodies on Newgrounds as well.
oh man characters popping back from the land of the dead for a stint really gets me... especially repeat offenders.
i suppose that is the way it has to be though- everyone is someone's favorite character.
wouldn't it be interesting if someone actually remained dead? there would have to be some serious character develoment in everyone realising they weren't comming back.
and less of jean grey! just stay dead for the love of god!
Wow, there's a thing! You're right, if characters actually remained dead, writers would actually have to invest time and effort in character development so that once gone they could be part of a comic's legend without being continuously referred to! Genius!
I think it's a good idea to give a particular character a rest, but there must be more interesting ways to do it than kill them off. Sometimes over exposure weakens the stories. Saying that, if a DC character walks away from a team or whatever they usually get their own solo book, usually rubbish.
I remember reading a Superman graphic, and he attended the funeral of some dude I can't remember his name. Bascially he was th eonly one there and was surprised and saddened that no one else turned out for the funeral of a superhero.
the reverand poitns out that people don't care because the heros always come back, he said he lost count of hwo many times he buried the Immortal man.
So if comic charcters are aware of it, or at leats bit part comic charcters. The surely the writers know it to?
If he's immortal, how did he die in the first place?
Also I think the term immortal is flaunted away abit much, when you consider the instances that are mentioned of vampires being immortal, yet they still die in sunlight and can be staked etc. Highlander, he's supposed to be immortal along with his kind and yet they can kill each other by beheading. I think immortal is term used to describe people who just don't die of old age.
thank you devil shadow!!! I had a huuuuuuge debate with people at school, I was pointing out that being immortal just means that you can't die of old age, but other people were saying it means you just can't die from anything. What do you guys think?
It'll be a fight to the death, but because this is a comic shop based forum the loser will return somehow in a spectacular let down of an action seqeunce.
i had all 5 but gave them away as no one would play what a shame iv met all these fans now which superhero trumps are the best marvel 1, 2, 3, or dc 1, 2 so much choice
Dude, i can't believe you've never played! It's like core education for children. Hmm, fondest memories of playing Star Wars Top Trumps in the 80s ...
Right, there are several varieties. I think the standard is 5 card Top Tumps. You deal out 5 cards to each player. The player on the left traditionally has to stand up on the first go and lays a card face down to the rest of the players. All the other players have to bid cards to guess what individual stats are on the players card. Players who get it wrong, have to stand up and also loose the bottom card off their deck. They also gain a point. The player is 'out' when a players points exceeds the number of cards they divided by the number of times they have stood up. They can only sit down by guessing the next person's card correctly.
There are also many variations including, Strip Top Trumps, Russian Roulette Top Trumps and Seven Card Stud Top Trumps.
And surely immortal just means you don't die from natural causes? I mean, the elves in LOTR were immortal but they got killed in large numbers with swords in their heads.
I am also immortal, actually sorry, i'm immoral ...
The Top Trumps or Immortality? I can it imagine it being quite depressing being Immortal, when all these people say that the water levels will rise, global warming will boil the Earth etc, but don't worry we won't live long enough to see that happen, unless of course you're immortal, in which case enjoy the view.
I went into a phase of collecting some Top Trumps; Simpsons, Fellowship of the ring, Two Towers, Warships, Military Aircraft and all Marvel and DC Top Trumps. Even though the Top Trumps great, I find that their stats can sometimes really suck
man digby thats some hardcore top trumping right there, I spent most of my GCSE science lessons playing top trumps it's da bomb. Marvel 1 and 2 packs are the best, 3 was just crap, never played the DC ones.
Doh! Nooooo, we don't really play Top Trumps like that as you can imagine - all that standing up and swapping points. Sorry, i was quite drunk on whisky when i wrote that. Luckily it was a nice whisky but now the bottle is empty. Whaaaa!
Actually the game is a good deal simpler. Split the cards between the group, and someone reads the best stat off their top card. The person who has the best stat on their top card gets all the other's cards and gets to pick the next stat off their next card. The winner is the one who ends up with all the cards. Easy.
And yes, the stats do usually suck. Its like they're created by people who are only half aware of the subject. But then if they hired a nerd to create the stats then you'd need a booklet per card explaining what scenarios the stats were actually relevant in. "Darth Vader has an 'Evil' stat of 90 but this will gradually diminish when played against Luke who has an 'Evil' Stat of -10". And so forth.
says the man who bought 2 big graphic novels in one week, gonna buy a comic this week, does own the pokemon game, likes star wars and marvel comics, most sci fi programmes and doesnt go to gigs and concerts or festivals all that often....
