My names Mark, you may remember me from such events as last time you bought your comics on a Saturday. I'm the tall, handsome one with an aura like sunshine. I'm going to be reviewing something every week or so. I haven't told Jared yet, but if he doesn't like it he can fight me, live on TV. For charity.
So....
Scott Pilgrim! By Bryan O'Malley (£7.99, if you were wondering). You probably haven't read it, I know this because I sell your comics and you haven't bought it from me. And also because it's my job to know as much about comics as is humanly possible, and I only just read it.
Quite frankly, though, it's the most refreshing thing I've read in age's. Scott Pilgrim has a perfect life: he's 23, in a band, between jobs and dates a high school girl (called Knives. That's right. Knives.) Until he meets Ramona Flowers, tries to date her and discovers he has to fight her seven evil ex-boyfriends. Romance mixed with comedy mixed with crazy kung-fu action.
It's great. It's the most fun I've had with a comic since Nextwave; it's fast, laugh out loud funny in places, and switches from intimate character moments to craxy over the top fight scenes effortlessly. Scott Pilgrim's your best friend, but better at fighting; it's that easy to get drawn in by the fun, realistic dialogue.
O'Malley really delivers on the art, too. I'm usually put off by cartoony styles, but here it's perfect for the tone. The looseness really lets the characterisation shine through, whilst the strong lines make the action really kinetic. I guess the closest comparison I can make in terms of tone is Shaun of the Dead, and it's that good.
But the depressing part? Bryan O'Malley's only 27. That's four years older than me, and he has his book. And my girlfriend wants to date him now.
Mark, I can't beleive you've only just read this book, I've been banging on about it for ages. This just shows your total lack of respect for me, the comic book medium and yourself. No wonder Anna wants to leave you for sombody she's never met, I want her to leave you too. And you missed out the best thing about it. It's totally Canadian, dropping in references to Toronto and Second Cup n stuff. If you want to read any other great Canadian comics should check out Louis Riel; Bannock, Beans and Black Tea (not a comic but illustrated by comic artist Seth) and Noth West Passage - awesome. If only there was a comic about Wild Bill Peyto! He'd kick wolverine's head in.
I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim very much, i've heard it talked about for a while but finally read it (brendans copy) on my night shifts this week! its totally awesome, and yes jared i loved the canadian references! its the kinda hybrid lifestyle between normal-kid-in-twenties and fighty-fight funness that i thought was super, hit me out of nowhere to be honest cos i hadn't read the back! i would like very much to be ramona...she had lotsof tea in her cupboard like me :) i even have one called Sleepytime and has a painting of a bear in jammies in front of an open fire in a rocking chair, knitting...i bet she has the same box.
Scott Pilgrim Book Three, Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness should be out in the next couple of weeks. I can see this series becoming our new Walking Dead. Totally awsome when it comes out but painfully long gaps between releases.
HOLY HANNAH! You're right, book three is out on thursday and we'll have more of books one and two too. Free Comic Evening and New Scott Pilgrim. Best day ever. Also new Avengers, 52, Wolverine and loads more.
