Just how utterly amazing is the Prestige? Recently I've been to see Casino Royale and Departed, both great films, but the Prestige is one of the best films I've seen for ages... I was desperate to figure it out but it kept me guessing right to the end. Both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are great...
I saw casino royale yesterday and for me it's probably one of the best recent bond films, best film I've seen in a while. I really want to see the prestige a friends said it's really good.
I thought that Christian Bale played his part a with a bit too much understatement, especially when compared to Hugh Jackman's performance, but given the revelation at the end I can understand why he would play it quiet and not want to make the audience suspicious. I'm trying not to give anything away but I think that the film was quite conflicted on whether or not the writer believes in magic. I haven't read the original book so I don't know if Christopher Priest's novel has the same problem, but in the film everything is explained as having happened in a rational non-magical manner (you might say that it is over explained) exept for Tesla's machine which seems to be magical. Which is bollocks really. Bond was hard as nails. It was strange not seeing the final showdown take place on a submarine or inside a volcano.
no giant space lasers in this one either, I dunno whether people would consider this good or bad but theres no lasers or invisible cars, laser watches, batmanesque grappling watches, cars with rockets in the headlights, submarinable lotus esprites, union jack parachutes or meathead henchmen just ol' jimmy bond kicking ass and taking names.
The Prestige is one of the best films I've seen this year. I saw some bits coming, only to be blindsided by another twist. I wonder if it's like Fight Club and you can get something different every time you watch it.
I also loved A Scanner Darkly, not only did it look amazing, but Keanu was acting "within his range" for once. I seem to recall discussing Keanu's filmography with Brendan, and I think we rated the same films - the ones where he's playing someone without a clue what's going on.
Oh yeah, The Prestige was excellent I totally agree. And I did guess the whole twin thing tho' ... but it was just as entertaining waiting till the end to see if i was right. And casino royale ... ohmygod ... I'm off to see it on saturday in york and i don't think i could be any more excited! Actually, thats a lie but its as close as.
I'm pretty sure its not a film of this year but i saw Lucky Number Slevin recently ... totally great, really. And Crash - my god what a film!!! If you haven't seen it see Crash. Honest. Wow.
yay for the prestige! i totally didn't expect it to be good- although i did hold on to poor silver in the scarey bits :D sorry silver! although they could have made the whole 'was he actually a twin or did he use testla's machine' a tad more clear.
bond is amazing! prepare to be wowed all ye who haven't seen it yet- although i still can't quite get over the fact that they saw fit to give him creepy luminous blue contacts, but not dye his hair dark.
i also loved the departed- good 'ol jack. i also went in really wanting to hate leonardo di caprio, but (suprisingly) he didn't really offend me with his presence. and go mark wallberg! who would have thought a former boy-band member would actaully turn out to be talented!
i have to say tho at first whn someone told me that there was no cool gadgets in this one i was a bit put off i mean wht is james bond without his gadgets.
Ah, the Departed - Di Caprio's meatball head was bearable for once, although they should have left the ending the same as the Hong Kong original rather than tacking on a 'happy' ending.
I have just ordered the Wolverine book , Weapon X - the whole process of how they bonded the Adamantium to his bones etc. Only its a month before i can read it (birthday!), so you all get some peace for a bit.
The Prestige was ace. There was just one scene where i felt really nausetious. I want to see Happy Feet hehe. I know its for kids but i like Animation!
I'm sure it was called march of the penguins when they first advertised it ages ago but theres a documentry called march of the penguins out all ready so maybe thats why they changed it. Boy Fantastic, I agree with you on the no gadgets thing but after seeing it i'm glad they didn't put loads in, it's amazin! everyone should go see it.
He's got a heart defribulator in his glove box....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A sat-nav phone from the future, a tracking device in his arm, a gun that never runs out of bullets... He's got plenty of gadgets, it's just that there's no horrible bit in a lab with Q or whoever "Pay attention 007, here's all the stuff you'll need for this mission...."
I have to say when I saw the railer for that Happy Feet in the cinema, I was laughing.
But Robin Williams is just THE funny guy. One of the best comdians ever in my opinion.
Hugh Jackman rules as well. He is Wolverine, did Oklahoma on the stage, a magican, a hacker, Van Helsing, a penguin and maybe even a rat. The guy has versatility.
yeah but you can buy mini difribulators, I saw em once on amazon.com. He does have gadgets but they're not invisible car gadgets or laser watch gadgets.
Don't know about Robin Williams been "THE" funny guy. Last interview I read with him he was seriously considering a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire. No problems getting good starring roles there then? Much like Steve Martin he's done a few memorable comedy films which unfortunately are far outweighed by the clunkers.
on the subject of films my local odeon isnt gonna be showing hollywoodland, the third film this year they've neglected to show that i've wanted to see.
i could've sworn that when the multiplex first came to the UK they said we'd get a selection of independent and foreign films as well as the commercial, but i cant even watch something slightly original because they need to show 60 "different" rom-coms every year.
there are some really really dire films around at the moment, that tenacious d film looks absolutely shite, I like their music but they should stick to music, and most romcoms or romantic films for that matter are commercially produced shite with jude law or jennifer lopez in who can't act her way out of a wet paper bag.
I like TD but like Arseface suggests the film looks crap. Maybe it's a vanity project but they should stick to the shorts/music videos.
And Clemfold's post that his local Odeon wont be showing Hollywoodland is a tad unusual considering it's an Affleck film, the good reviews and the talk of Oscar nominations surrounding the film.
