After a couple of poor weeks, at last I actually took some comics home from OK and enjoyed them!
Previous weeks:
World War Hulk - various titles - Really disappointed by this so far. The plot seems so forced. Sorry but, I expect more from my stories than "Hulk Smash!", even with Hulk. And, God, this sounds so Fanboy, the collective might of Avengers, X-Men, Et Al [Not the Leeds band, well probably not], would wipe Hulk out in 10 minutes.
Daredevil - I like Brubaker, but he's dragging this out. And Deathblow is awful.
X-Men #200 - What a let down. The story jumps around with no flow, and Carey is writing almost everyone out of character. The artwork just does not work. Ditch Ramos [I like his stuff, just not on this - his Impulse run was brilliant], and keep Bachalo on full time, he's such an underrated artist. [Pub quiz - what was the 1st X-comic he penciled?]
Now this week brought All Star Superman, which is consistently the best comic of the year, if not the decade, and Thor, which I didn't have high hopes for, but it really worked - let's just see if they can put a decent story together after the "introduction" issue.
Yea and verily! I doth agree with thee about the return of the Odinson! T'was truly a fine tale, Mr Str...[shant bother trying to spell his name] hath set himself up for a mighty series!
Picking up my copy of Thor today. I just hope it's as good as I'm hoping it'll be. Should be safe enough, since I've never been let down by Joe Straczynski (yet).
Gamma gamma Hey! I think you’re being a tad harsh on WWH. I thought Hulk Smash! was the whole idea. It’s an Event, whaddya want? Sense? Hulk says “ Caveat Emptor!”.
Daredevil – Yeah, there’s just something not right about Brubaker’s run. He seems to be turning it into Daredevil: The Man Without Sense (“He could be about to chuck my missus of the roof. I give him the benefit of the doubt. Ooops! My bad!”). Still better than the previous writer, but I dunno. I just dunno. I smell auto-pilot.
Deathblow? Azzarello’s Deathblow? Gotsta disagree here; it’s fantastic. A riotous p*ss take of all those self consciously edgy and gritty comics Fanboys love so dear. It’s a hoot, and it has a talking dog. Every issue gets more fantastically ridiculous. But, if you took all the regard Forumites have for Ellis, Ennis and B*ndis, doubled it and added some more, it would still be only a third of the regard I have for Azzarello. So, I can’t be trusted, I’m a little partial. Deathblow - Punching pretension in the face and then running off laughing since 2006. Did I mention the talking dog?
X-Men – No comment at this time.
All-Star Superman – best super hero book on the stands bar none. Awesome. Why isn’t everyone buying it? I hope you’re all waiting for the trade. I don’t even mind the erratic schedule as it’s only 12 issues and I never want it to end. There’s so much love in this comic sometimes it rubs off on my fingers. I want more stuff like this. Essential.
Scalped - I'm enjoying this more and more as the series goes on - It's got action, adventure and mystery, but it feels more like an ongoing TV cop drama than any of the other genres - just the way things play out, the flashbacks etc. Really great storytelling and very evocative artwork.
Nightly News - Excellent ending to a great series, I loved the art and the story equally. Highly recommended to anyone looking for something a bit different - hopefully there will be a trade collection soon.
Chronicles of Wormwood - This is getting a bit boring now... only a couple of issues left though, I have just enough interest left to finish the run.
I don't know about Thor. There's something about it that just isn't...... well just isn't Thor. Maybe I expected a bit more from the comic, but apart from a cracking Michael Turner cover (and I don't particularly like Turner) it wasn't the most enjoyable comics read for me this week.
(That honour went to a copy of Disney Comics Gorilla Gorilla by Art Baltazar, 50p in the OK bargain box. Just good clean, mindless fun).
very much so, it got a bigger verbal response from me than when... well, i don't want to spoil anything for those waiting for the trade. but the time in the other issue when yorick found out that thing from that person. if you get me.
By Krypton's moons! I feel the need to point out that the last issue of Action Comics features a section in 3-D. Yes, fellow Superfans - glorious migraine inducing 3-D! By Ray Zone no less; the guru of the process. You also get some nifty cardboard 3-D spex in the style of General Zod's goggles, which you can wear while reading the comic (and your missus can laugh at you as you sit there like a big daft man-child). It's pretty good. Go Superman! Go!
The best way to not worry about not enjoying certain comics/events/etc is to simply buy everything so that you lose all sense of perspective and your brain turns to mush. Works for me, anyway.
I've been enjoying Daredevil and Iron Fist of late, but still have a three inch pile of comics to get through from recent weeks so can't say about Thor or recent X-Stuffs. I agree with Lamont that Deathblow has been great too, and the recent Y was very good. And The Boys is top draw too.
Kirkman/Phillips Marvel Zombies! Uber-super-duper-mega-quantum YAYS! This one caters for three of my favourite things: 1. Post-Apocalyptic Futures 2. Zombies 3. Alternate Universes.
