I picked this up just expecting it to be bubble gum for the eyes. I've watched Dustin Nguyen's artwork get better and better over the last couple of years and previews of this series looked to be another leap forward for him, drawing and rendering the whole thing himself, packed with visual colouring effects. It truly looks like a modern comic of the new millenium.
What I didn't expect was the story to be so compelling. Scott Lobdell, never my favorite writer, throws us right into the action. Essentialy it's a space opera, two technologically advanced waring races, one human and the other something that looks like it evolved from dolphins, have finally called a truce. Just as they're celebrating the peace in the Galaxy they're attacked by a third very different race, one that appears to use magic as it's main weapon.
I thought this was just going to be another Wildstorm comic that fell short of expectations but this science vs magic concept (think Star Trek vs Lord of the Rings) has got me wanting more.

I'll second that, OK. It really made my libido stir.

I also think it's interesting the way Manga's seeping into mainstream western comics. Epic sci-fi/fantasy is something that's never really taken off in comics over here, but there's no way you could call this anything but that without your sphincter hemorraeghing through sheer wrongness. Something about the colouring really screamed Manga at me too (even though most of the Manga I've seen's black and white, that counld be an anime thing), I think it's that slightly hazy quality, similarly there's hints of it in Nguyen's pencilling.

I'm glad this comic's out there.
