Seriously, how good is this guy? Me thinks he may just be the best comic book "creator" working today. (What the hell do you actually call someone who writes and draws - writer/drawer? artist? artiste?)
All the ACME stuff is not only brilliantly written and drawn, it pushes boundaries, it challenges what comics are. In my book, comics that read like a movie story board (i.e. 99% of the stuff out there) are just lazy. I love stuff that actually uses the unique medium of the comic book to it's full effect.
I think you just call someone like Mr. Ware a "Genius". Have you seen that Big Tex page where it's just a single picture split by a grid, and the seasons change as you read across and down, and the only "action" is a leaf/some snow falling? With no human figures? And it covers Big Tex's life from soup to nuts in a way that is both minimalist and heartbreaking? Best damn single comic page I ever did read. Reprinted in the big Acme Novelty Library hardback book. (I may have the specifics wrong - as the book packed up, but if you've seen it you'll know it.)
Chris Ware -he's funny,he's sad, sometimes I don't know what he is, but he's always, always worth reading.
