It's allright but a bit sparse, as the inevitably awesome film doesn't open until Christmas. But! There is a Blog by Franklin The Miller in which he reads the minds of Spirit fans and tries to put their fears to rest, particularly about That Whole Blue/Black Suit Thing. Yes, he does. Which is nice of him.
It's Thursday morning and I'm not in the best of moods. And watching the trailer doesn't help. It's cr*p. I watched it twice to make sure. The second time I thought I was watching a TV teaser for some (deservedly) long forgotten cop show. Or worse.
There is nothing of the Spirit in the trailer other than the character, and even then it is form over mannerism. The voiceover is pure Dark Knight. It's Sin City 2. It's an ego driven creator who wouldn't know empathy with a character if it sat on his face and fa*t*d to give him a clue.
It isn't the Spirit.
The film forum makes interesting reading. One particular thread (I think it's the Trailer thread) has examples of Eisner art posted to show how FM is following Eisner's vision of the character. Which it doesn't. And apparently the black & white of the film is alright and in keeping with the original strip because Eisner once published a B&W daily strip. I'd said a good 90% of the postings are negative apart from one member who it would appear has never read the Spirit but posts almost hysterically at great length about how the film is true to the character. One member even suggested that FM read Cooke's recent work on the character. I nearly wet myself laughing.
It is laughably cringeworthy isn’t it. I hate the way he keeps invoking Eisner. Not that he invokes him regularly, that’s only proper, but the way he does it. I fully expect his next posting to detail how Derek Acorah has channelled Eisner and Eisner has said only The Frankyman is fit to translate his legacy onto the Silver Screen. Actually it’s not laughable it’s horrible. Shut up Frank, just shut up. Draw some comics or something. Just shut up.
From the blog on the site: "To drive the point home, THE SPIRIT, despite any accidental impression left by that kickass teaser-trailer, is a full-color movie."
Why would anyone think that a film was in the Sin City "black + white + colour" style, when only 100% of the footage available so far is in that style. And it's directed by the same guy. I wonder...
Maybe we're all just naive. Y'know the trailers in B&W, it's CG backgrounds, it's an FM production, etc, etc, etc. Maybe we're all assuming too much.
That or it's just sh*t.
Who knows the next trailer may feature........SPARTANS!!!!! (Voiceover "My city screams...as the Spartans run riot down town on their way to another slaughter.")
I hope it features a non-revisionist Ebony. If anyone has the balls to do it without irony, Frank Miller does. Come on Frank, show us how big your balls are.
When it's sunny always wear a hat to protect your head, OKOliver!
Frank's balls are bigger than you can imagine. There's nothing wrong with comics Frank Miller can't fix...with his balls. He has balls that could command a God. Frank's balls go out with a Lion's roar! Showing his balls...best part of the job. They are also covered with a soft fuzz like a peach. Erm...
I thought they'd got the racially sensitive chaps who did Jar Jar Binks to do Ebony so it is as faithful as possible to the source material. That's what the fans want, right, faithfulness? Also, as a bonus he teams up with Chop Chop from Blackhawk and Connie from Terry & The Pirates. And all the whileFrank Miller laughs like a Demon from his base on the dark side of the moon. Wait! That's no moon..it's his balls!
