Geez, how much stuff was out this week!? I usually pick up 2-3 titles a week, this week I got 9! Plus Wizard, plus that Vertigo intro TPB thingy.
All Star Superman - Consistently the best book out there, just a pure joy to read. Shame Quitely had to have some help drawing this one, though the difference is negligible. The only bad thing about this book is it's coming to an end!
Final Crisis - I bought 3 DC books this week. That's never happened before! I usually feel disappointed with myself if I buy 1! Got this 'cos of the guys doing the book. To be honest I was quite impressed. It was a typical 1st issue, introducing plot strands that I'm sure will tie together at some point. I'll definitely pick up the next ish.
Batman - Hmmm all my DC books are written by Morrison! This was my least favorite however. The hype machine sucked me in to picking the Batman RIP story up. Maybe I'm paying the price for not reading the rest of Morrison's run first because it was a tad confusing. At lot of stuff going on for one issue. I'm not convinced by Daniel's artwork. It's not that it's bad - it's pretty good - it's just a bit lackluster for such a supposed big story.
Giant Size X-Men - Fantastic art, crisp dialogue, big ending, one of the x-men not coming back (as promised), guest stars galore. It could almost be brilliant. Except for one small detail. Could someone please re-read the whole story and tell me what the hell it was all about!? I'm more confused having read the last chapter than I was before it! I could not tell you what happens in this comic, because I just don't know.
New Avengers - Weakest Secret Invasion chapter I've yet read (so far think rest has been excellent), but you do get Ka-Zar and Zabu! Not sure I've head Lord Plundar and his missus speak is such ways before, but that's the Bendis way for you!
Thor - was thinking of dropping this, but the latest issue has given me second thoughts. Beautiful artwork from Copiel.
1985 - I was really looking forward to this, but the first issue hasn't really swayed me one way or the other. It's going to end up being a really cool and clever story. Or just daft. It's a fine line.
Daredevil - Brubaker's always solid and I like the story that's building up here, but I'm getting a bit tired of "woe is me" Matt.
X-Force - Not sure what the point of this book is other than having a violent X-Men team. The story's dragging and I still can't decide if I like the artwork or not. But Archangel's back so it might not be all bad.
Tragically,I didn’t read any new comics this week. I did however read Blackhawk Archives Vol.1. These are some quite savage and mental comics indeed and after reading them I can safely say: ladies like some Blackhawk loving, Comics were breaking the “Fourth Wall” without fuss way back in 1941, having your own theme song is always a plus, as is having your own island and Reed Crandall is amazing (he’s one of the artists not a Blackhawk as such). Fact: 67 year old propaganda comics rock! Who knew?
I totally agree with Mike on Astonishing X-Men. What was Colossus fighting that guy for? Why were all the marvel heroes drooling down themselves? And the character that didn't come back, if they're not dead already, wont they starve to death in about 3 days anyway? It was great to see Cassaday draw the real Fantastic Four rather than the evil FF from Planetary.
I really liked 1985. I didn't know what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It kind of reminded me of Grant Morrison's Authority.
In the shop we were pimping 1985 and Final Crisis as 'Marvel vs DC', 'Millar vs Morrison', 'old school cosmic crossover vs modernist study on fictional universes'. Can you guess which sold bestest?
Colossus was fighting that guy because Colossus overcompensates mightily for the fuzzy feelings he gets down below when he sees Cyclops in the swimming pool. Marvel heroes have always drooled down themselves, it's realism. That character is coming back. In a 26 issue mini-series detailing precisley how they starved to death over a period of three days. I haven't read AX-M yet, you can tell can't you?
1985 vs. FC? Marvel vs. DC? etc. vs. etc. It's a trick question, isn't it!? The discerning readers laughed at your amusing parody of empty retro-tribalism and plonked their shekels down en masse for Northlanders/Scalped while waving tear stained copies of Loveless and crying: "Never again!". And then...I woke up!
The heroes were all drooling as something happened to them after Dr Strange tried his magic, so they were all imagining they were saving the world when really they werent. It seemed to me like someone set that up to happen so that they would fail in stopping the giant bullet. Who set it up? No idea, feels like Whedon forgot to write a page.
For me this issue of New Avengers was one of the best SI issues so far, cos it finally delved into what was going on in that first NA story.
Uncanny X-Men was brilliant, Brubakers best so far! He nailed Wolverine like no one has for a long time, and his use of Nightcrawler was also excellent.
Noticed two new Marvel Essential collections in the shop over the last two weeks ~ The Rampaging Hulk & Captain Marvel, both worth picking up, particularly the former which featured for the first ten issues or so Hulk tales set in the early days of the Marvel Universe when he had a flat head (the later issues tended to reflect the tone of the then popular TV series).
Thor was worth it for the next issue ad alone. And did anybody else out there pick up the first issue of The Angel MK series?
