So this has been on my mind ever since Lee mentioned something the other day. And I do have way too much free time on my hands. It's been almost 5 years since the Avengers dissasembled, and since then we've seen 6, count them, 6 new versions of the Avengers (not counting the Ultimates, or the time-traveling Invaders from 'Avengers/Invaders). So were the original team's boots too big to fill? Do we really need so many teams, there are others who don't carry the Avengers banner... The new Avengers were obvisously going to form, especially after the Raft prison break, and Iron Man creating the Mighty Avengers during the Civil War events was a nice touch to the opposing sides conflicting views but same overall objectives. But the Young Avengers didn't seem like a good choice for new super heroe squad, Iron Mans initiative Avengers didn't need to carry on after the Initiative event ended (and if Iron man was discredited, why wasn't everything he'd done), and the Pet Avengers was just too far (so i'm glad it was a limited series). But whats next with so many other marvel teams. We've already got the Dark X-Men, will we next be seeing the Dark Fantastic Four, or the Dark New Warriors. Theres even been an influx of new teams, with Nick Fury's Secret Warriors, and the brief return of the Agents of Atlas. Dark Reign: The List will most likely create a new status quo, and maybe a new marvel banner, as Normon Osborn goes after each team one by one. Or we'll get another Civil War... And where the hell is Iron Man?
Iron Man is in Russia, I think. Or at least he was there recently.
Even I skipped Pet Avengers. Overall, I like that the Dark Reign has touched almost all corners of the MU - it reinforces that it is a universe and that characters don't exist in isolation. And some of the little minis have been good - I'm enjoying Zodiac and Hawkeye. At the same time, their really is no need for so many Avengers books. But, on the other hand, Brother Voodoo's been in one!
i've calmed down a bit now, my internet crashed so I had to start the rant all over again, and I wasn't really complaining, the more comics the better, but it can be hard to follow for some fans, and incredibly inaccessable for those that arn't yet...
See, Lee has just mentioned perhaps the only virtue of Marvel going mental with its crossovers - they manage to dig out all the forgotten, goofy (but potentially amazing) characters. But there really is no need for all this 'Dark' , 'New', 'Exciting', 'Perplexing' Avengers books. I'm not really following the whole Dark Reign thing too closely, just through Invincible Iron Man, but am baffled to see near-identical versions of some Avengers teams trotted out as a new team (Norman Osborne putting together essentially copy-cat teams utilising super-villains with powers equivalent to their heroic counterparts, e.g Venom as Spider-man). Like a lot of Marvel's recent 'events', it seems like a good idea with a great story at the centre of it thats just run away with itself and its sense of importance. It gets ever more extreme and ridiculous as time goes on, and will probably end with a big ol' reset anyway.
I like the way Dark Reign has effected the books I usually read, but, six months on it's getting a bit stale. I'm hoping The List will breathe a bit of life into it all again.
Osbourne and all his Dark Avengers et al are revealed to be skrulls! This was just the second phase of Secret Invasion!
Then Skrull Osbourne gets shot by The Kingpin, who is hailed as America's hero and given the reigns of all the security services. Follow his advventures in I'm-not-fat-this-is-all-muscle Avengers!
Cap, Thor and Iron Man team up, save the day and reclaim the Avengers name, starting a more light hearted period of Marvel comics, more about heroes than villians, until they decide to have another huge crossover in a few years time that makes everything dark and moody again.
Norman will get his arse handed to him by (hopefully) Spider-Man.
Steve Rogers will be the new head of HAMMER and re-name it SHIELD for both obvious reasons.
Bucky will carry on as Cap on the Avengers team.
Nick Fury will finally get the holiday he deserves. Or will carry on with a secret black ops team that uncovers a massive conspiracy that sets up the next big crossover.
Haphazard Avengers Make Marvel Entertainment Revenue...
both relevant and topical, I am very proud of my self for thinking of it... seriuosly hard to find a word beggining with H, but Hoarding or Hybrid I also like...
Has anyone else noticed that even though we're supposed to be entering the Heroic Age after Seige ends, that ther'es still practically the same number of teams? Shouldn't they all be playing nice? The Avengers are back, but then the New Avengers are staying, as are the new New Thunderbolts, and now the Secret Avengers seem to be replacing the Dark Avengers...
and now Avengers: Initiative has been replaced by Avengers Academy, and Young Allies probably replacing Young Avengers or Runaways... oh, and the Pet Avengers are back, http://comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=1979
I'm sure I'd read that there is a new Young Avengers series in the works by the original team but won't be out for sometime. Young Allies doesn't interest me (though I'm hoping the new one will mean someone will finally buy my Heroes Reborn Young Allies comic haha) but a new Young Avengers series would be at the top of my reading pile.
