A pointless thread, but I made my first trip to OK today, and I think it's ace. We have two comic shops here in Sheffield and they're both rubbish compared. Could have spent ages in there, especially upstairs. I'll definitely be back on a regular basis from now.
Of course OK is ace. It has a great website too. Spending time in there is advisable and enjoyable. It's the money I spend in there that concerns me...
Could my comics be fetched from that cupboard under the stairs by a hot chick on rollerskates instead of you or Oliver? That'd be good. Also, odd numbered issues could be free. And you could sell battenberg.
I think you should have a giant nude animatronic Frank Miller (a FrankMillermatronic?) crouched in the front window. To preserve his modesty (although I'm sure he has nothing to be modest about, hey ladies am I right or am I right!) and prevent court orders his lower regions should be enveloped in a simulated tar pit. Said tar pit should be labelled "Hollywood". The frenzied and unnerving gesticulations of the Millermatronic should always be directed upwards with the arms in particular tending towards a clawing reaching motion. Just ever so out of reach of the giant talented hands should be a tree branch. Said tree branch should be labelled "Comics". At unpredictable intervals the leathery face should distend its jaw to emit a colossal bellow. A nude Frank Miller in your shop window? Striking terror. Best part of the job.
We updated the website less than a year ago! Really? It looks old already? Link me to something you think we should emulate. Give me an idea of what you want.
Updating the "Recommended Read" regularly might be a thought. I know it's probably a pain but someone might just be swayed that week by the mighty judgmental power of OKComics into picking up a copy of Whatever Comics Number Thingy when they pop in.
A bit of blurb for each of the "Library" books could be useful. Just the facts off the back of the book so people have a rough idea of what the book is. I mean, Terry Moore's Echo: Moon Lake? Is that a TBP consisting of pages of Terry Moore standing in the Grand Canyon shouting "Moon Lake"? If I'm not already reading it I probably don't know. Spider-Man, Batman and Star Wars, yeah, okay, people probably know what they are.
All good ideas. And there's a short answer to all of them. Technical difficulties! Long answer is, somebody hacked into the site and I'm unable to upload new images, which is why it looks a bit bland at the moment... Incidentally. What kind of stuff would you buy from the online OK shop?
Blimey! It's like War Games! Or for The Kids - Die Hard V.4.0 (which was deepy, deeply sh*t. Yes it was.). I'm sorry to hear that about the hacking and the technical stuff, I feel all bad now. Still you should be selling plenty of issues of Marvel Tales #1.
What would I buy from the Online Shop? Signed pictures of the staff? No. (Well, maybe). Comics and stuff! I imagine some people would like to know what you have in stock on your lovely shelves. Particularly people who are forbidden to enter the shop on threat of tazering. It's hard to impulse purchase when you don't know what's on offer. And impulse purchasing makes Retailers all warm and fuzzy inside with good reason. Of course it would be a logistical nightmare but I think it would pay off in the end.
The problem is, and I found this when I ran the first webshop a few years ago, when we list ace stuff, with a pithy bit of text and a photo, like of one of our best sellers, say for instance Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns, people sat at home in front of their PC can, at the click of a mouse, find the same book for loads cheaper, often at a discounted price that we can't compete with. So there's no point. We have however, had great success selling single issues of mass market stuff, like Buffy, Dark Tower and Umbrella Academy... Also. Die Hard Four Freedom, or whatever it was called, is brilliant. Len Wiseman's best film!
Ah, I see, OKComicsman so you think your years of retail experience count for more than the addlepated notions I just pulled out of my hat! Oh. I think you are right. Ah, I see, I see now. It's the old "what is your USP?" It's not the comics but your bright and attractive shop with its attendant staff of helpful, physically arousing and well informed homunculi. Got it. And I hope "Len Wiseman's best film!" was used on the poster. It made me laugh.
Are you sure you're a child, Sam, or do you just say that so you can go on the bus cheap? Sure, you can watch War Games but you can't have it. Die Hard V.4.0 is your War Games. War Games is my bunch's War Games. We didn't clean Hitler's clock just so you whippersnappers could claim our bad films. You've got your own. Len Wiseman is your God. Worship at his blue filtered confusingly edited altar!
So. Thanks massively to Rob, I've got more control over the website now. I've already updated the crossover page, added a few images etc. I'll get right onto adding more info about the Library Books, updating the recommended comic and maybe adding opening times, though they vary depending on... er, variables. Just so yous guys know, except for Sundays, we're always open by 9am, and always open until at least 5.30, though usually 6pm. We're often open earlier, I'm usually around from about 8am.
How about a map for "out of towners"?
Rob is continuing work on the webshop. Though if anybody has a great webshop that they think we should have a look at for inspiration, please feel free to post a link here...
Here's not a suggestion: I was going to say that it'd be dead handy if there was a crossover guide for those of us who buy, say, five Siege tie-ins and are wondering what order to read them in. And then I actually looked at the website instead of heading straight to the Forum and discovered that there was! So, err, keep up the good work...
We actually get a lot of people who buy stuff just because it ties in with other stuff that they are reading, even though they have no interest in the extra stuff and little interest in the original stuff to start with.
as if you just made that reference... also, no offence, but the cross-over guide is just a calandar of when the issues are on sale, the reading orders the same for most of them, but somethings, like the Siege: Loki one-shot, which starts before Siege...
Most Marvel "events" have a messed up release/reading order. New Avengers is claiming to be a Siege tie in, but the first two "tie-in" issues are set BEFORE Siege even starts.
yes i did that with dc but as i said before with marvel there's nothing.I went on FP and well...I..went through every page of the marvel stuff and just wrote on word what i was after.I have too much time on my hands don't I?
How popular do you guys think Graphic Novels are nowadays in libraries? I get really peed off about the fact that most libraries online don't give enough info about them such as which issues are collected etc, most don't have enough photos either.
So I rang round the libraries and asked if there was any chance I could do the job even if it was as a volunteer I love talking about graphic novels and writing about them too.I am quite boring though in regards what I do read mostly mainstream superheroes,Green Lantern is my favourite DC closely followed by the Flash and Iron Man for Marvel. What is it with Wonder Woman though?I buy mixed stuff on a regular basis by the box off e-bay and I got a couple of Wonder Woman issues in with the last lot number 2 of the 87 series and didn't think it was too bad but I wouldn't buy it.And the only Wonder Woman trade i'm after is the Amazons Attack one purely because it involves other heroes.
I like Vertigo but only read Hellblazer and Swamp Thing(is Swampy dead and buried now?)Am I the only one who can't get into the Gaiman Sandman series?
Also don't know if anyone's interested but theres a Graphic Novel reading group at Coalville Library one saturday a month.
Finally is it worth ringing round comic shops to see if I can put descriptions of Trades on their website?
Re: Sandman. You're not alone, Greg. I've never been able to get into it either. I'm sure the story is probably as good as people say it is, but I've always been put off by the randomly rubbish art.
Ok Comics-In regards graphic novels which line sell better mainline dc(superman, batman etc),?marvel or manga?just wondering as my local library in burton on trent has done a big push on graphic novels this month but only focussed on manga stuff
im sorry greg i was going to read your comment to but it was too long and im quite lazy and lamont i also pretend im a cild to gte int thought bubble for free
I've never tried sandman either. i really, really love Neverwhere though (an adaption of Gaiman's neverwhere by Mike Carey & Glen Fabry was done a few years back) and am currently watching the Beeb's adaption. Its not too bad, despite a lack of any kind of budget.
sandmans briliant, the first graphic novel is the best, the art aint great but it does the job. i refer hellblazer though cos most issues have a self enlosed story, with sandman ya gotta get all six or whatever issues to work out what happening
I have a question, when did OK move from that arcade (more like a tunnel) down near the bottom of briggate and House Of Frasier, I just always remember there being the 'We Have Moved' poster there for aslong as I can remember...
Just have a look at: http://www.qscomics.com/ for back issues. I presume they still do this, I used to look for what I wanted on the QS site, give Jared a list and then he's have them ready for me in the shop to pick up :-)
